Australian Kangaroos in PNG Prime Ministers XIII 2023

FIDOW

After arriving at the Port Moresby Jacksons International Airport, NRL super star Hamiso Tabuai-Fidow is still overwhelmed with the reception he received from rugby league obsessed fans that turned up in numbers to welcome the Australia PM’s XIII side yesterday.

Fidow or best known as the “Hammer” was the crowd’s favourite when he stepped out of the terminal with many chanting and cheering the super star.

Fidow told Sports Scene today after conducting a rugby league clinic at the National Football Stadium that; “The feeling is unreal”.

“I cannot grasp the moment when I stepped out, it was like I was some kind of a rock star.” he said.

“It’s my first time here and it’s an eye-opener.

“Just to see how the locals get so much out of our presence here, means a lot. They don’t have the luxury of seeing us day-in, day-out.

“I’m so amazed by how the fans went to another level of appreciation when we arrived. I’m stunned at the reception.

“It is a bit different from home,” he said. “I was told it would be like that. The locals have a great passion for the game.

“It’s just unreal. I’m grateful to know how my name is so popular in PNG. This experience will always be remembered as long as I live,” said Fidow.

The 22-year-old speed star who is of both Torres Strait and Samoan heritage, represented Samoa at last year’s World Cup but sadly missed out on the finals due to sustaining an ankle injury.

Having starred for the Dolphins in their inaugural NRL season and represented Queensland in the State of Origin this year, Tabuai-Fidow has emerged as one of the competition's most dangerous outside backs.

He said he was hoping to play his best in order to earn a Kangaroo jersey for the upcoming Pacific Test series.

“it’s a dream to put on the green and gold jersey and the PM’s XIII will be just the right platform.

Fidow also took the opportunity to encourage the young aspiring players in PNG who are chasing an NRL dream to; “Believe in yourself, don’t be afraid to chase your dreams; if you work hard enough you can achieve your goals.

Meanwhile, we asked Hammer to explain the significance of the Fin whenever he scores a try and this was his response; “It’s a celebration of my culture.”

“It’s one of my totems of a shark. And definitely I'm looking forward to letting the shark out whenever I score a try in tomorrow’s game at the NFS” Tabuai-Fidow added.
